While we are researching our family trees, we might stumble across some old documents which are very difficult to read. Legal or old parish documents might be written in a forms of handwriting known as secretary hand, court hand or a mixture of the two!

We may also discover documents which are abbreviated to save space on expensive materials such as parchment, while others have paragraphs, text, or short-hand in Latin! Many land documents or marriage settlements also have legal terms which are baffling.

You or the gift recipient will spend a day learning how to read old handwriting from parish and legal documents, how to find out about legal terms mentioned in the documents and how to undertake transcriptions to a high standard. You or the gift recipient will also receive tips on how to navigate Latin without having to learn it!

Like all our other gift experiences, the day starts with a trip to a coffee shop for refreshment, cake, and a discussion about the gift recipient's research. Following this, there will be practical sessions looking at old documents, online glossaries, and knowledge bases.

Does this cover documents in languages other than English?
No. Only English documents are covered. The exceptions to this are: some Scottish documents which have dialect and word variations and some Latin for beginners.

Gift Recipient has a specific document they want to read, can they bring it?
Yes they can. It might be possible to work on it on the day or if not suggest strategies which might apply depending on the nature of the document.
