Family Tree Gift Experience: Learn how to use Ancestry.co.uk to research your family tree
You or the gift recipient are invited to London to learn how the Ancestry.co.uk website may help you research your family tree.
Quick Guide
The gift recipient will learn:
- How to start a tree on Ancestry.co.uk.
- How to add individuals to the tree.
- How to search the databases on Ancestry.co.uk.
- How to use the card catalog on Ancestry.co.uk.
- How to save records to a tree on Ancestry.co.uk.
- How to download records and save to local drive.
- How to use other websites in conjunction with Ancestry.co.uk.
You or the gift recipient will be accompanied by your own personal genealogist, who will guide you through using Ancestry.co.uk to help research your family tree. You will learn how to filter results, use the best search terms, use wildcards, view records, add citations, use Ancestry in tandem with other websites to get the best results, and ultimately find the correct ancestors!
On the Research Day
The day starts with chat over a tea/coffee about the family tree and the research or information the gift recipient has already discovered. The rest of the afternoon is spent looking at the Ancestry.co.uk website and other websites which will help the gift recipient use Ancestry efficiently.
Does it cover overseas research?
No, however we can give some general advice about how tackle overseas research.
This Gift Experience is suitable for gift recipients with British origins, it does not cover overseas research.
(If you or the gift recipient has Scottish origins then you will need to purchase credits at ScotlandsPeople in advance of the day.
This is because the Scottish government do not licence their records to third parties and therefore their records cannot be accessed for free in archives outside of Scotland. Ancestry.co.uk holds some Scottish records, but they are not sufficient to research a family tree accurately. This genealogy experience will show the gift recipient how they can use the Ancestry website in tandem with ScotlandsPeople for efficient and effective searching).
