  • Description

Due to COVID19 we are currently providing a 15 MONTH expiry date on all genealogy experiences rather than our usual 12 MONTHS.

DNA testing has recently become the latest tool for genealogists to look at their genetic history and use it to confirm or extend their family trees.

Many individuals are given DNA tests as gifts and then find after they have taken the test, they do not know what to do with the results. This genealogy experience, aimed at absolute beginners or those who are contemplating taking a test, will help you or the gift recipient learn about DNA tests and what can be gleaned from them.

Who is it for?
Absolute beginners! This person is curious about using DNA testing for their family tree research. They are willing to learn basic biology to comprehend the different tests and terms used when testing, and that by using this knowledge, they can effectively sort their matches and understand how someone might be related to them.

How many people can attend?
One person only.

Can they bring a Plus One?
Yes if purchased (see Optional Second Person).

What’s it all about?
You or the gift recipient will learn through presentations and practical about DNA testing from a qualified genealogist; if attendee has recently taken a DNA test, the genealogist will look through their results with them and explain matches and how to find out more information.

Topics and areas covered range from:

  • Explanations of DNA scientific and technical terms along with basic biology.

  • What questions do you want answered and what is your reason for testing?

  • The differences between the types of tests available.

  • Who are the testing companies?

  • How to create a genealogical paper trail for effective results (many testers don't understand this!).

  • Ethics and unwelcome results.

  • Accuracy of ethnicity estimates.

  • Sorting results and determining close relationships through cMs.

Where do the Genealogy Experiences take place and am I part of a group?

No you are not part of a group, you will spend a day with your own personal genealogist and will be taken to a London archive, library, or other suitable location (depending on location’s opening hours).

How long are the Genealogy Experiences?
You will meet the genealogist at 11:00 am and they will leave you at 3:00 pm. You are of course free to stay at certain locations if you wish, however if the genealogy experience takes place at the Society of Genealogist, you must vacate the building by 3:45 pm.

On which days do you operate Genealogy Experiences?
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays at the Society of Genealogists if possible.
Mondays at another location.

Due to the limited opening hours of the record offices, the gift recipient will need to be flexible. This gift experience therefore might be unsuitable for some gift recipients.

Where do I meet the Genealogist?
There are two meeting points:

1/ at the entrance of Barbican Underground Station, London (Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan Lines);

2/ at the entrance of Farringdon Underground Station, London (as above)

Once you have made your booking you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on where to meet.

What is the Itinerary?
Morning: A visit to a coffee shop for a one-to-one discussion and chat. (If you decide to visit a coffee shop before you meet your genealogist, then you will still be taken to one once you meet-up so you can have your included drink and cake!)

Lunch.

Afternoon: Practical sessions.

What’s included in the price?
Your time with the genealogist and all practical sessions.
Morning drink and cake.
Any record office entrance fees.

What’s excluded from the price?
Travel expenses.
Hotel expenses.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Can I bring someone to accompany me (Optional Second Person)?
All of the genealogy experiences are designed for one person only. It is possible, however, to bring an Optional Second Person to keep you company if this has been purchased.

If you have received a genealogy experience as a gift, your genealogy certificate will tell you if a person can accompany you for the entire day, for example ‘DNA for Absolute Beginners for Two.’

Please note due to limited space at the Society of Genealogist, it may not be possible for the Optional Second Person to stay with the gift recipient at all times. There are other floors within the building for the Optional Second Person to visit including the comfy Common Room should over-crowding in the research area be an issue.

Where no Optional Second Person has been purchased, anyone travelling with the gift recipient will be required to leave them at the meeting point.

A certificate without the extra person would simply be ‘DNA for Absolute Beginners.’

Are there age restrictions?
We are not able to take any attendees under the age of sixteen.

What do I bring?
Lunch (Alternatively buy from one of the sandwich shops in the area),
Paper or a notepad,
Pencils
(without eraser),
Notepad,
Login to any online trees and DNA test results.

IMPORTANT - You/Gift Recipient and optional accompanying friend or family member will need to bring the following:

A photo ID
Proof of address

Is there anything I cannot bring?
Yes do NOT bring the following:
Large bags, rucksacks, or suitcases (nothing bigger than 50cm x 50 cm x 31 cm),
Pens,
Erasers,
Laptop/Computers,
Valuables.

Most record offices do not allow the above items.

You can bring your phone as long as it is on silent mode; phone calls must be taken in lobby areas or outside the building.

Where can I eat my lunch?
This must be consumed within the designated eating areas at the record office/archive and not in any reading room or library.

How long do I have on my voucher?
Your voucher lasts for 12 months. You must book and complete your genealogy experience by the expiry date shown on the voucher.

We will not fulfil the Gift Experience after the voucher has expired under any circumstances.

What are the best months to book my genealogy experience?
Please avoid October, November, and December – these are our busiest times. Our genealogy experiences are subject to availability, so if you have had the voucher for 11 months and then try to book, but cannot because we are fully booked, your voucher cannot be extended and you will loose your genealogy experience. We recommend booking as early as possible. Currently, the quietest months are July, August, and September and these are therefore the best time for bookings.

How do I check if my preferred day is available and book my experience?
Please visit the following web address and follow the instructions: https://www.familyhistorygifts.co.uk/book-genealogy-gift-experience

What happens after I make my booking?
We will send you a Confirmation Email which will contain the details of your booking and where and when to meet your genealogist.

How can I ensure the Confirmation Email does not end up in my spam folder?
Make sure you add our email address to you email Address Book/Contacts before you book and if possible whitelist our email address with your email provider.

Our email: researchatfamilyhistorygifts.co.uk (replace 'at' with @)
